DEN 1150 Expanded Functions B
Description
Expanded Functions B will offer the student experience in taking impressions and related bite registrations, orthodontic skills, cement removal, temporization, placing and removing periodontal dressings, suture removal, and placement and removal of matrix bands. (The Minnesota Dental Practice Act has made it legal for licensed dental assistants and students enrolled in accredited dental assisting programs to perform these functions.) The student will gain Preclinical competence in these duties through the use of typodonts and clinical competence through classmates and outside patients.

Prerequisite
Satisfactory progress in the dental assisting program, or special permission from the instructor. Student must be certified in CPR before taking this course.

Learning Outcomes
1. Take diagnostically acceptable alginate impressions and bite registrations.
2. Place and remove elastic orthodontic separators.
3. Remove excess bond from orthodontic appliances using hand instruments.
4. Describe preselecting orthodontic bands.
5. Remove and replace ligature ties and arch wires on orthodontic appliances.
6. Demonstrate excess cement removal.
7. Fabricate temporary crowns and bridge.
8. Demonstrate placement and removal of matrix bands.
9. Demonstrate suture removal.
10. Describe placement and removal of periodontal dressings.
11. Demonstrate proper study model trimming.
12. Remove excess bond material from teeth with rotary instruments after removal of orthodontic appliances.
