EMS 1102 Emergency Medical Technician Completion/Bridge
Description
Emergency Medical Technician Completion/Bridge introduces the necessary didactic and cognitive skills to provide basic life support care as an EMT. The EMT Completion/Bridge meets the requirements outlined by the educational standards of the Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians for the direct employment as an Emergency Medical Technician with a basic transport service, emergency room and emergency services within law enforcement or fire departments. Students must have current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider CPR card meeting the current American Heart Association standards to register for this course.

Topics to be Covered
1. Patient assessment, reassessment, critical thinking and decision making, communication documentation
2. Medical emergencies and behavioral emergencies and medication administration
3. Traumatic emergencies
4. Emergency care of special populations including geriatrics, obstetrics and children
5. EMS operations, including comprehension, application and psychomotor skills outlined by the current educational standards
Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate thorough primary, secondary and ongoing assessments for signs and symptoms of a medical/trauma of patients in the emergency setting
2. Explain and demonstrate correct treatment for all medical emergencies and when to administer the appropriate medication for the emergency
3. Administer appropriate treatment for all traumatic injuries including musculoskeletal injures and all soft tissue injuries
4. Identify treatment for obstetric emergencies and how to care for the mother and newborn
5. Describe emergency care for special populations, behavioral, and the geriatric population
6. Demonstrate and apply fundamental knowledge of EMS operations, highway safety, patient extrication, hazardous materials, multi-casualty incidents, incident command and the EMS response to terrorism
7. Demonstrate the application of correct psychomotor skills for all medical and trauma situation scenarios
