EMS 1110 Emergency Medical Responder
Description
Emergency Medical Responder introduces the initial foundation of emergency care and scene safety. Prepares individuals to evaluate and identify emergencies, employ their knowledge, psychomotor skills and application of those skills to provide basic life support as an Emergency Medical Responder. Includes initial patient assessment and comprehensive prehospital care as outlined by the most current educational standards identified by the Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board, the American Heart Association’s BLS CPR for Healthcare Provider standards and DOT standards.

Learning Outcomes
1. Define key terms used in Emergency Medical Services and proper use of medical terminology and EMS acronyms
2. Apply fundamental knowledge of the EMS system to the safety and well-being of the EMR and medical, legal and ethical issues to the provision of Emergency Care
3. Perform a thorough assessment of patient’s airway and breathing to determine appropriate airway adjuncts to be used in an emergency setting
4. Demonstrate the use of and appropriate administration of oxygen therapy
5. Describe and demonstrate the essential elements of a primary assessment including vital signs, sample history of the trauma for medical patients
6. Describe how to appropriately administer emergency care to special populations including obstetrics, geriatrics, pediatric and special needs
7. Explain the fundament knowledge of EMS operations, highway safety, patient extrication, hazardous materials, multi-casualty incidents, incident management, and EMS response to terrorism
