HLTH 2220 Drugs, Society, and the Individual
Description
Explores relationships between drugs, sociocultural influences, and individual attitudes and behaviors. With an emphasis on psychoactive chemicals, this course surveys the physiological effects and psychosocial impact of a wide array of drugs. Investigates patterns of drug use; drug laws, consequences of drug abuse; addiction, intervention, treatment, recovery, and prevention strategies from both individual and social perspectives. Prerequisite: College level reading or placement by multiple measures.

Topics to be Covered
1. Drugs in context, including patterns of use, cultural influences, regulation and enforcement, and sociocultural impacts.
2. Basic Pharmacology, including impacts on anatomy and physiology, as well as psychopharmacology.
3. Specific drugs and classifications, including stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and illegal substances.
4. Drug abuse prevention strategies and resources.
Learning Outcomes
1. Determine the basic pharmacological effects of a broad range of mood-altering substances and selected non-psychoactive drugs.
2. Define current patterns and historical contexts of use/abuse/addiction.
3. Articulate social issues and ramifications of drug use/abuse/addiction in various contexts.
4. Analyze the multi-cultural forces that influence drug-taking behaviors.
5. Examine personal drug use and underlying attitudes/beliefs/emotions.
6. Recognize signs of drug abuse/addiction in self and others.
7. Identify resources for effective drug abuse referrals, interventions, and treatment programs.
8. Develop confidence in how to seek assistance for referrals, interventions, and treatment programs.
9. Identify factors and practice skills which can reinforce and sustain a drug-free/drug-responsible lifestyle.
10. Create effective, culturally appropriate, integrative teaching and support strategies for the prevention of drug misuse/abuse/addition.
