NURS 2135 Geriatric and Psychiatric Nursing
Description
Geriatric & Psychiatric Nursing focuses on nursing process and clinical judgment in the care of patients and their families. Concepts of therapeutic communication, health promotion, safety, pharmacology, and nutrition are integrated throughout content. Unique needs of the gerian client and individuals experiencing disruption in their mental health will be addressed.

Topics to be Covered
1. Holistic care of the older adult in the normal aging process.
2. Utilize the nursing process in planning holistic care.
3. Care of the frail older adult including end of life care.
4. Physiologic effects of aging and illness related to respiratory, psychological/cognitive, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, endocrine, gastrointestinal, hematologic, neurologic, and immune dysfunction in the older adult.
5. Promotion of healthy aging in the community.
6. Factors that can affect the mental health of an individual across the lifespan.
7. Benefits and limitations of various treatment methods used to treat mental illnesses.
8. Treatment settings for psychiatric care.
9. Legal and ethical considerations as related to patient rights of the mentally ill client and of society.
10. Fostering a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship.
11. Explore psychiatric illnesses and substance use disorder related to cause, risk factors, symptoms, treatment, and outcomes.
12. The impact of violence on individuals and society.
