Description

Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries II examines advanced level concepts and builds on to content learned in Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries I. This course emphasizes applied anatomy, kinesiology, and evidence-based prevention, evaluation, and management of knee and lower leg injuries. It also includes advanced study of shoulder, elbow, and hand injuries as they relate to sport and exercise. Students will continue developing proficiency in the clinical principles and techniques used by certified athletic trainers, including injury prevention strategies, acute care, therapeutic interventions, and rehabilitation planning. This course is recommended for students pursuing athletic training, sports medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, coaching, physical education, or recreation-related fields and is intended for those seeking deeper clinical and applied competency beyond introductory coursework.

Learning Outcomes

1. Differentiate common athletic wound classifications and apply advanced assessment, cleansing, dressing, infection-control, and return-to-participation decision-making using current clinical standards.

2. Apply biomechanical principles to select and perform sport- and injury-specific taping, wrapping, and padding techniques that enhance joint stability, neuromuscular control, and injury prevention.

3. Show efficiency with basic on-field assessments, neurovascular evaluation, splinting, immobilization, and safe transfer and transport of extremity injuries within prehospital and sideline care settings.

4.  Implement a venue-specific Emergency Action Plan that integrates interdisciplinary coordination, rapid response protocols, equipment readiness, and rehearsal for catastrophic injuries and medical emergencies.

5. Classify fractures by location, pattern, and severity and correlate mechanisms of injury with tissue loading to guide immediate management and referral.

6. Evaluate a training room using a systems-based approach and propose evidence-informed improvements in workflow, safety, infection control, equipment layout, and patient care efficiency.

7. Demonstrate advanced taping and wrapping techniques across joints and conditions, using clinical reasoning and sport demand.
