SPAN 2201 Spanish III

Description

Spanish III provides for a review of grammar and vocabulary study and allows for practice of the more difficult grammatical concepts in Spanish. Interactive activities using authentic text materials, various literary genre, videos in the target culture, thematic cultural units, and written exercises help students to increase proficiency in the four language modalities: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Prerequisite

SPAN 1102, one year of college Spanish, three years of high school Spanish, or consent of instructor.

Topics to be Covered

1. A review of materials normally covered in Spanish I and Spanish II

2. Situations: Geography and the environment; traveling; health and health care; products, materials and marketing; giving advice and socially acceptable behaviors; relationships and personal values; dealing with stereotypes, prejudice and societal pressures; examining the past and discussing the future and the role of technology; family life and values; cultural practices, such as death, coming of age, etc.

3. Grammar and structure: Review as class needs. Commands and making requests; present and past perfect tenses; indicative and subjunctive moods of verbs; conditional forms; passive voice; prepositions, etc.

4. Readings: Various authentic text materials; various literary works (poems, essays, short stories, etc.)

5. Culture: Health care in the global community; relationships; stereotypes, prejudice; gender equity; various works of art; interaction of cultures; death and dying issues

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate the listening, speaking, reading and writing process in Spanish at an intermediate level.

2. Integrate their knowledge of the Hispanic culture and their own culture through discussion, projects, and journaling in the target language relating to authentic materials (essays, interviews, articles from newspapers, etc.).

3. Interpret, create and role play situations demonstrating an understanding of varying views on social issues, beliefs, and political influences.

4. Demonstrate communication skills necessary for living and working in a multi-cultural society.
