SURG 1155 Operating Room Practices

Description

Operating Room Practices will facilitate the practice of setting up different surgical procedures including Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) procedures. The student will prepare for procedures from start to finish. The students will observe, practice, and demonstrate skills in the lab setting. This course is designed to prepare the student for the clinical setting.

1. Creation and maintenance of the sterile field for various surgical procedures

2. Minimally Invasive Surgery

3. Sequencing and anticipation

4. Specimen care, dressings, drains

5. Demonstrate count protocol

6. Dismantle sterile field and doff gown and gloves

7. Remove drapes

8. Room turnover and confidentiality

9. Review Clinical Binder and Surgical Roles

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate techniques of opening and preparing various supplies, instruments, and equipment needed for various procedures, with the maintenance of asepsis technique at all times.

2. Demonstrate the count protocol for preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative.

3. Demonstrate initial steps for starting a surgical procedure and the Time-Out.

4. Demonstrate the applying and removal of drapes and protecting the incision site.

5. Demonstrate dismantling of the sterile field, care of the dirty and clean instruments, and doffing gown and gloves.

6. Demonstrate preparing the dirty case cart and taking it to the dirty room.

7. Perform decontamination of the surgical suite and equipment.

8. Demonstrate point-of-use cleaning methods.

9. Demonstrate the use of various types of sterilization machines, proper technique in storing, handling, distributing sterile supplies and the various wrapping techniques. Skills will be practiced and demonstrated in the Clinical setting.
