Description
Clinical I provides supervised occupational experience in the clinical setting. It applies knowledge acquired in the classroom and laboratory to the development and performance of competencies associated with operating room policy and procedure.

Topics to be Covered
1. Participating in a variety of surgical procedures in the role of the First Scrub and Second Scrub while working toward the goal of completing a minimum of 120 procedures in combination with Clinical II.
2. Preparation of the patient for a surgical procedure.
3. Preparation of surgical instruments and supplies for a surgical procedure.
4. Assisting other members of the surgical team as needed (i.e. circulator).
5. Proper cleaning of a surgical suite and surgical instruments and equipment.
6. Maintenance and care of instruments and surgical equipment after a surgical procedure.
7. Sterile processing, assembling of instrument sets, and sterile packaging techniques.
8. Sterile storage and distribution process.
Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the purpose of the observation role.
2. Develop professional competency by performing preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative skills specific to a surgical technologist in the scrub role during an arranged clinical experience.
3. Plan, integrate, and perform the duties in the First and Second Scrub Role.
4. Demonstrate maintenance and care of instruments and surgical equipment after a surgical procedure.
5. Evaluate the development of professionalism and adjust your performance skills for the next procedure.
6. Utilize sufficient documentation for verifying cases and roles performed.
7. Demonstrate procedural proficiency by completing a minimum of 120 surgical cases in combination with SURG 1170 Clinical II.
8. Demonstrate Point of use decontamination.
9. Demonstrate inspection and assembly of an instrument set and sterile packaging techniques.
10. Demonstrate operating of a steam sterilizer.
11. Participate in the sterile storage and distribution process.
