Description

Co-occurring Disorders in Substance Use will help students gain an understanding of an integrated approach to address both experiences, and the ways they overlap from the beginning of the treatment process (or immediately following detox or stabilization). Strategies to help screen, recognize, and treat mental health conditions will be introduced.

1. Define co-occurring disorders and explain the relationship between substance use disorders and mental health.

2. Articulate ethical and legal considerations relative to treating clients with co-occurring disorders.

3. Develop intervention and continuum support strategies tailored to individuals with co-occurring addiction and mental health needs

4. Understand the importance of team and the integrative approach recognizing best practice models.

5. Understand the basics of assessment skills as it relates to the initial assessment process.

6. Identify basic and common signs and symptoms of co-occurring disorders, developing a working knowledge between substance use behaviors and mental health disorders.
