Description

American Sign Language I will teach students basic ASL communication strategies used by the Deaf. Course includes expressive and receptive sign activities, sign vocabulary, finger spelling and numbers, and aspects of Deaf culture. This course is offered on-line only.

Learning Outcomes

1. Develop an understanding of the syntax structure of American Sign Language (ASL).

2. Interpret sign language using a variety of topics.

3. Organize and select appropriate signs used in communicating ASL.

4. Communicate in a language other than English.

5. Describe the differences between ASL and other languages.

6. Describe the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the Deaf and hearing culture.

7. Describe the nature of sign language through comparisons of the language culture to other world languages.
