MEDA 1135: Laboratory Skills
Description
Laboratory Skills focuses on the role of the medical assistant in the laboratory setting. CLIA-waived testing is studied and performed in the laboratory areas of urinalysis, immunology, hematology, chemistry and microbiology. Specimen collection, quality control and documentation of test results are included. Additional topics explored include electrocardiology, respiratory testing and emergency preparedness. The class also reinforces the fundamental laboratory skills of infection control, safety and phlebotomy taught in MDLT1100.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate proficiency with basic lab tasks, including but not limited to reviewing a lab directory, collecting and handling specimens, competing a lab requisition and reviewing a lab report.
2. Perform quality control measures that validate laboratory results.
3. Articulate the guidelines and rationale for CLIA-waived testing in the areas of urinalysis, immunology, hematology, chemistry and microbiology.
4. Perform CLIA-waived testing in the areas of urinalysis, immunology, hematology, chemistry and microbiology.
5. Demonstrate performance of electrocardiography and basic pulmonary function testing, applying knowledge of the cardiac and respiratory systems.
6. Recognize abnormalities in lab and diagnostic test reports.
7. Explore the role of the health professional and other community resources in emergency preparedness.
8. Evaluate the work environment to identify safe vs unsafe working conditions.
9. Develop and practice personal and environmental safety plans, demonstrating proper use of emergency equipment (eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, etc.) and compliance with safety protocol.
