SPAN 1101: Spanish I

Description

Spanish I assists students in developing proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish, mastering fundamental grammatical concepts, and integrating the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. The course is designed for students with little or no prior language study.

Topics to be Covered

1. Situations: You and your peers in the classroom setting (meeting people, attending classes, describing people and things, discussing family and personal information, telling time, discussing nationalities and languages, expressing preferences and desires, discussing weather, daily routines and celebrations, expressing emotions, discussing careers and work activities, abilities and future plans.

2. Grammar and structure: commands, simple present verb tense, verb register, pronouns, gender, adjectives, possessives, informal future, present progressive verb forms, reflexive verb forms, indirect object pronouns, use of infinitives and prepositions

3. Readings: Excerpts from authentic materials; WEB sites

4. Culture: Greetings, friendships, family, sports and leisure activities, gestures, cognates, etc

Learning Outcomes

1. Carry on a short conversation about personal interests including what they are doing and are going to do.

2. Ask and answer simple questions using practiced patterns.

3. State personal preferences and feelings.

4. Express agreement and disagreement using memorized expressions.

5. Read and respond to level-appropriate written materials on familiar topics.

6. Identify the main idea of selected authentic materials.

7. Demonstrate understanding of written and spoken language that has strong visual support.

8. Write short guided compositions on familiar topics in the present time frame.

9. Identify similarities and differences between the target cultures and the student’s own culture with topics such as family, Spanish around the world, greetings and university systems.

10. Identify and describe contributions from the target cultures such as artwork, architecture, music, dance and literature.
