SPAN 2202: Spanish IV
Description
Spanish IV integrates the mastery of structural concepts with the study of authentic text materials on a variety of cultural topics, various literary genre, and provides for developing proficiency in the four language modalities.

SPAN 2201, three or four years of high school Spanish, or consent of instructor

Topics to be Covered
1. A review of material covered in SPAN 2201, as well as additional needs of students
2. Situations: Materials and marketing; giving advice and socially acceptable behaviors; Family, friendship and marriage; the future and personal goals; Geography, demographics and the role of technology; possibilities and consequences; the role of men and women in today’s global societies; cultural diversity in today’s society (look at historical and political perspectives) the global economy
3. Grammar and structure: Review as class needs. Commands and making requests; present and past perfect tenses; indicative and subjunctive moods of verbs; conditional forms; passive voice; prepositions; pronouns, etc.
4. Readings: Various authentic text materials; various literary works (poems, essays, short stories, etc.)
5. Culture: Relationships in the global community; gender equity; global economics; various works of art; interaction of cultures
Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate the listening, speaking, reading and writing process in Spanish at an intermediate level.
2. Integrate their knowledge of the Hispanic culture and their own culture through discussion, projects, and journaling in the target language relating to authentic materials (essays, interviews, articles from newspapers, etc.).
3. Interpret, create and role play situations demonstrating an understanding of varying views on social issues, beliefs, and political influences.
4. Demonstrate communication skills necessary for living and working in a multi-cultural society.
