Introduction to Ceramics provides hands on experiences with building forms using hand building and wheel throwing methods. Students also learn decorating, glazing and kiln operation.

Learning Outcomes

1. Develop proficiency in hand-building with slabs, pinching, coiling, extruding and wheel-throwing

2. Create a body of work that demonstrates individual artistic expression and personal approach to functional or sculptural ceramics

3. Develop proficiency in wedging and proper clay preparation

4. Demonstrate basic knowledge of advanced surface treatment techniques including carving, texturing, slip applications, and a variety of glazing methods

5.  Demonstrate the required safety standards

6.  Develop understanding of historical and theoretical context of ceramics within human expression

7.  Critique personal and classmates’ work via engaging in continuous improvement in a respectful and constructive manner
