ART 1224 Investigations in Raku
Description
Investigations into Raku, students will produce a variety of ceramic forms using several forming methods. These will be decorated and fired with reduction methods.

Topics to be Covered
1. A history of Raku in the USA and in Japan
2. Chemistry of glazes and their reactions to oxidation and reduction
3. Methods of forming clay
Learning Outcomes
1. Produce a bowl using the pinch method and coil method
2. Demonstrate faceting a vertical form
3. Form a tray and decorate it with a sgraffito design and form with a resist technique
4. Modify an extruded form
5. Form a Chowan and Yunomi on the potter’s wheel
6. Mix various chemistries of glazing and test a Raku glaze
7. Demonstrate the reduction process in Raku firing
8. Demonstrate the required safety standards
9. Discuss the outcomes, terminology and aesthetic principles of Raku in a group setting
10. Compare and contrast the history of Raku in the United States and Japan in writin
11. Compare and contrast the cultures in the United States and Japan and how imperfections are celebrated via Raku
12. Critique personal and classmates’ work via engaging in continuous improvement in a respectful and constructive manner
